The cost of your favourite TV shows
Streaming platforms are increasing in success, popularity and therefore revenue as this is the new norm of watching any form of entertainment.
Netflix dominates this industry with a staggering 270 million subscribers, outperforming, Amazon Prime, Disney + and others. Paid users have risen 16% adding 9 million more this year.
Netflix report their revenue at over $9.37 billion so far in 2024 having increased 15% year on year.
Bridgerton
With the recent release of Season 3 of the Bridgerton series bring even more popularity to the show and cast with 45 million views. Netflix calculated that over the 5 years of the shows lifespan, it has contributed £275 million to the UK economy.
The show had a $168m budget per episode of season 3 which covered costs of salaries and more. With salaries such as Julie Andrews being paid around $1m for her narrator role, salaries were a large part of the budget.
Fallout
With 65 million viewers one on Prime’s biggest hits fallout has not only driven success to the TV show but largely directed popularity towards the original Fallout games. The mobile spin-off revenue rose from $20,000 to $80,000 after the shows release.
The show had a budget of $153m for the season with the game company, Bethesda earning $180million in revenue from the series’ creation.
Baby Reindeer
A smaller production but one which still brought 56.5million viewers to Netflix within 26 days and became the 10th most watched program.
The show sparked controversy and debate on social media as Richard Gadd portrays events from his life shocking the viewer each episode.
Since the release the creator and lead actor, Richard Gadd has made over £1million and his company, RRSG show has almost quadrupled its profits.
Shogun
With one of the largest cast crews and expensive international series with the complex world building of a feudal Japan which has been applauded by both Japan and the U.S. for its accuracy.
Shogun received 9million views within 6 days with a 250 million budget to create the highly complex season of 10 episodes.
House of the Dragon
Finally, we had to include House of the Dragon with it’s recent season 2 premiere as the show continues.
With little information so far of season one there have been reports that the season 2 budget is set to be even larger.
The season one budget was an insane, $20 million per episode for the 10 episode season. This season pulled in 29 million viewers for each episode on average.
