Ben Foster Files for Divorce From Laura Prepon After Six Years of Marriage: What Led to the Split?
Ben Foster has filed for divorce from Laura Prepon after six years together, according to recent court filings. The Alpha Dog actor, 44, submitted the paperwork electronically, listing the date of separation as September 9, 2023. Citing “irreconcilable differences,” Foster stated in the document that the couple could no longer “live together successfully as husband and wife.” Foster also requested the court uphold a 2018 prenuptial agreement between the two.
The pair shares two children: daughter Ella, born in August 2017, and a son born in February 2020, whose name they have kept private to maintain a degree of family privacy. Ben and Laura’s connection dates back to their teenage years, but it wasn’t until 2016 that their relationship turned romantic. The couple went public with their engagement in October of that year, with Prepon debuting a diamond ring at the premiere of The Girl on the Train. They married in an intimate ceremony on June 3, 2018.
Throughout her pregnancy, Prepon spoke about the life-changing experience of becoming a mother, reflecting on her journey with excitement and wonder. “I’m creating life, and it’s so incredible,” she told Us Weekly in a July 2017 interview, noting that she and Foster had been keeping a low profile in the Pacific Northwest. Known for her privacy, Prepon admitted that balancing motherhood with her career came with challenges. After welcoming their daughter, she returned to filming Orange Is the New Black within just six weeks. “It’s torture,” she admitted in May 2018, explaining that she was even directing episodes when her daughter was just a few months old. “But she would be proud if she knew what I was doing,” she added, sharing that she often took Ella along on outings, hoping to expose her to various environments and people.
The arrival of their son was announced with an Instagram photo showing Prepon kissing her newborn’s hand, captioned, “Welcoming home our new bundle of love. Overwhelmed with gratitude.” In an April 2020 interview, Prepon discussed the ongoing negotiation of privacy within a public life, especially as they wanted to keep certain details, like their son’s name, private.
The You and I, As Mothers author has often reflected on ways she and Foster stayed connected, even amidst their busy schedules. In an August 2021 interview, Prepon shared that they found peace together through daily meditation. “It’s something that helps me to hear my own voice,” she said, adding that they enjoyed spending time at home watching classic movies, where they’d pick a director and explore their work over homemade meals.
