Manchester United Appoints Ruben Amorim as New Head Coach
In a bold move signaling their intent to revitalize the club, Manchester United has officially named Ruben Amorim as their new head coach. This appointment comes on the heels of the dismissal of Erik ten Hag, whose tenure ended after a disappointing start to the season that left United languishing in 14th place. Amorim has signed a contract that runs until June 2027, with an option for an additional year, and is set to officially join the team during the upcoming international break.
Transitioning Leadership
The announcement follows confirmation from Sporting CP, the Portuguese club Amorim managed, that Manchester United had reached out regarding their coach. As part of the transition, club legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, who served as Ten Hag's assistant, will lead the team on an interim basis until Amorim’s arrival. Van Nistelrooy’s first match in charge ended in triumph, guiding United to a convincing 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the Carabao Cup, securing their spot in the quarter-finals against Tottenham.
Reports indicate that Amorim, 39, was the only candidate interviewed during the hiring process, reflecting United's confidence in his abilities. To facilitate his early release from a 30-day notice period with Sporting, United reportedly paid an additional €1 million (£840,000) on top of Amorim's €10 million (£8.4 million) exit clause. This investment underscores the club's commitment to finding a coach capable of restoring Manchester United to its former glory.

A Proven Track Record
A former midfielder for Benfica and the Portugal national team, Amorim retired from playing in 2017 and began his managerial career at Braga two years later. His rise to prominence came during his tenure at Sporting, which he joined in 2020. Under his leadership, Sporting clinched their first league title in 19 years in 2021 and repeated the feat earlier this year, showcasing his ability to achieve results and develop talent.
Sporting has had a perfect start to the current season, winning all nine of their matches and sitting three points clear at the top of the league, further demonstrating Amorim’s effectiveness as a manager.
Amorim is considered one of the most in-demand young coaches in football and has already established a reputation for his tactical acumen and leadership qualities. Interestingly, he completed an internship with Jose Mourinho during Mourinho's tenure at Manchester United, which may have provided him with valuable insights into the club's culture and expectations.
Amorim's debut match as Manchester United's manager is scheduled for November 24 against Ipswich Town at Portman Road. Before he officially takes the reins at United, he will oversee three more matches with Sporting, including league games against Estrela Amadora and Braga, as well as a crucial Champions League clash with Manchester City.
Reflections on His Journey
In a recent press conference, Amorim reflected on his career and the opportunity ahead of him. "The soap opera is coming to an end," he remarked, acknowledging the intense speculation surrounding his future. He added, "In everyone's life, there are moments when we are doing well, but we often seek something more, perhaps to prove ourselves further."
As Amorim steps into his new role, all eyes will be on him to see how he shapes the future of Manchester United and leads the club back to the upper echelons of English football.
