Newham in East London has emerged as the fastest-growing area in the UK for small business creation, with a 175% rise in new firms established since 2010. This rapid growth highlights East London’s position as a thriving hub for ambitious entrepreneurs and business leaders, according to a new report by the East London Growth Group.
East London: A Hotbed for Entrepreneurial Growth
The report reveals that Newham saw the number of businesses rise from 4,840 in 2010 to 13,290 today, a remarkable increase driven by the area’s young, dynamic workforce and supportive environment for business. Seven of the top ten fastest-growing local authorities for new businesses are in London, with Salford, Luton, and Manchester also making the list. Howard Dawber, Deputy Mayor of London for Business and Growth, applauded the area’s “entrepreneurial spirit,” pointing to the high concentration of new ventures as evidence of East London’s growing economic potential.
This trend aligns with demographic shifts in East London, which has welcomed 325,000 new residents, with over a third of them between the ages of 25 and 49—a prime age group for entrepreneurial activity.
Calls for Improved Infrastructure and Housing Support
Despite its rapid growth, the report stresses that Newham and other East London areas need more support in terms of affordable housing and transport. The influx of new businesses and residents requires an infrastructure that can sustain this growth.
Alison FitzGerald, CEO of London City Airport, emphasized the need for a cohesive approach to support the region’s momentum. “This insightful report shows that East London is one of the best places in the UK to start and grow a business. The priority now is to work as a group to identify clear solutions for how we can capitalise on this momentum and unlock more opportunities for East London.”
The East London Growth Group is advocating for policies that address these infrastructure challenges, aiming to enhance the appeal of East London for emerging businesses and talent alike.

Local leaders are enthusiastic about Newham’s future as a business hub. Sir Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham, expressed pride in the area’s success. “I am delighted that Newham has been identified in this research as the most entrepreneurial place in the country. People who live in the borough—many with roots in other parts of the world—respond to the challenges they face with energy, imagination, and determination,” he said. “This research finding provides good grounds for optimism about the future.”
