Biden Cancels Additional Student Loans in Final Forgiveness Round
Biden Cancels Additional Student Loans in Final Forgiveness Round.
The Biden administration is moving forward with canceling federal student loans for an additional 55,000 public service workers via the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
On Friday, the Education Department announced this initiative, which benefits teachers, nurses, service members, law enforcement, and others who have met the eligibility criteria. This program promises to wipe out loans after a decade of service in government or nonprofit roles.
This round of relief, totaling $4.28 billion, is anticipated to be the last before President Biden wraps up his term in January. While he couldn't fulfill his broader promise of widespread loan cancellation, Biden has shifted his focus to enhancing relief through pre-existing programs.
During his administration, the Education Department has made it easier to qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness, which had a staggering 99% rejection rate due to complicated rules and confusion about eligibility.
With this latest relief effort, Biden has now canceled an extraordinary $180 billion in federal student loans through existing programs, benefiting 4.9 million Americans, including $78 billion for about 1 million borrowers through PSLF.
“From Day One of my Administration, I promised to make sure that higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity,” Biden said in a statement. “Because of our actions, millions of people across the country now have the breathing room to start businesses, save for retirement, and pursue life plans they had to put on hold because of the burden of student loan debt.”
The Democrat hasn't quite hit the mark when it comes to providing broad relief for millions of Americans. Biden's initial effort to cancel student loans was shot down by the Supreme Court, and his second try is stuck in a legal mess thanks to some Republican states.
In October, he rolled out another proposal aimed at wiping out loans for those dealing with different financial struggles, but it probably won't see the light of day.
Trump hasn't laid out any specific student loan strategies for a potential second term, but he did label Biden's cancellation efforts as illegal and “vile” while on the campaign trail. Meanwhile, Republicans in Congress have criticized Biden's approach, arguing that it unfairly shifts the financial burden onto taxpayers who either didn’t attend college or have already paid off their loans.
The Biden administration's decision to cancel an additional $4.28 billion in student loans for 55,000 public service workers marks a significant victory for those who have dedicated their careers to public service. By simplifying the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program, Biden has provided much-needed relief to teachers, nurses, law enforcement officers, and other essential workers.
This move highlights the administration's commitment to reducing the financial burden on those who contribute to society's well-being. While challenges remain, this initiative represents a meaningful step toward ensuring higher education is accessible without overwhelming debt, providing individuals with the opportunity to thrive.
