Early Life
Tom Brady was born on August 3, 1977, in San Mateo, California, into a family that was all about sports. He’s the only son and the youngest of four kids in the Brady household, with three older sisters: Nancy, Julie, and Maureen. Growing up in a Catholic family, he often went to San Francisco 49ers games with his folks and looked up to Joe Montana as a kid.
He was also a big fan of the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. As a young boy, he attended a football camp at the College of San Mateo, where he learned the ropes from future NFL quarterback Tony Graziani, who was his camp counselor.
Brady graduated from Junipero Serra High School in San Mateo in 1995, where he played football, baseball, and basketball. He became the starting quarterback during his junior year and spent his senior year creating highlight reels to send to colleges he was interested in. Back in the mid-90s, the college recruiting scene was pretty different from today.
If he were graduating now, he’d probably be seen as a four-star recruit, but those rankings weren’t really a thing back then. He narrowed his college choices down to Cal, UCLA, USC, Michigan, and Illinois. Interestingly, he was also picked by the Montreal Expos in the 18th round of the 1995 MLB Draft but ultimately chose to play college football at the University of Michigan.
In college, Brady spent his first two years as the backup quarterback, sitting behind future NFL star Brian Griese. He had a tough time getting on the field, but everything changed in 1998 and 1999 when he started every game. In his first full season as a starter, he broke records for the most pass attempts and completions in a season for the Wolverines. Out of the 25 games he started, Michigan won 20. Despite his solid college performance, he wasn't picked early in the draft. Instead, he was selected 199th overall in the sixth round of the 2000 draft by the New England Patriots.
Career
Brady's late draft pick is often seen as the biggest "steal" in NFL history. He became the starting quarterback for the Patriots in just his second season and spent an impressive 20 seasons with the team, setting the record for the most seasons as a quarterback for a single franchise. He’s one of only two quarterbacks to snag a Super Bowl win in their first year as a starter.
With the most wins in NFL history, he never experienced a losing season while leading the Patriots. He also holds the record for the most division titles (16) by any quarterback. In the playoffs, he boasts a 30–11 record, making him the all-time leader in playoff victories and appearances. Since 2011, he has guided the Patriots to an NFL-record eight straight AFC championship games, totaling 13 overall. Brady has been selected to 14 Pro Bowls, tying the record for the most in NFL history.
In 2016, he faced a four-game suspension due to his alleged role in the Deflategate scandal, but he and the Patriots bounced back to win two of the next three Super Bowls.
In March 2020, Tom Brady made headlines by leaving the New England Patriots to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While in Tampa, he rented a luxurious waterfront mansion from Derek Jeter for about $70,000 a month.
With the Bucs, he clinched his seventh Super Bowl title after defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 31-9. After a brief retirement announcement in February 2022, Brady officially hung up his cleats for good in February 2023, leaving behind a legacy filled with NFL quarterback records.
Tampa Bay Contract
Tom's contract with Tampa Bay is at least $50 million for two years. He'll get a base salary of $15 million along with a $10 million roster bonus every year. If he meets certain milestones, the deal could go up to $60 million. Interestingly, Tom passed on a bigger offer from the Patriots because it wasn't fully guaranteed.
Fox Sports Contract
On May 10, 2022, news broke that Tom Brady had inked a massive 10-year contract worth $375 million to step into the Fox Sports broadcasting booth for NFL games after he retires. With an annual salary of $37.5 million, this would make it the biggest deal in sportscasting history, allowing Brady to rake in more than double what former quarterbacks Tony Romo and Troy Aikman make as commentators. However, recent updates indicate that Brady might be considering backing out of this agreement.
FTX Collapse
Back in June 2021, Tom Brady and Gisele Bündchen were announced as the latest "Brand Ambassadors" for the crypto exchange FTX. They appeared in several commercials, including one where Tom shared the screen with FTX's founder, Sam Bankman-Fried.
Fast forward to November 2022, and FTX went belly up, filing for bankruptcy in just a few days. Shortly after, Sam Bankman-Fried was arrested and sent to the U.S. to face serious charges like money laundering and wire fraud.
After the dust settled from the bankruptcy, some details about Tom and Gisele's compensation from FTX came to light. On January 10, 2023, a bankruptcy court document revealed the biggest individual equity holders of FTX. It showed that Tom received 1,144,861 common shares, while Gisele got 686,761 shares.
Kevin O'Leary, the TV personality, was listed with 32,000 shares. He mentioned in a CNBC interview and during Senate testimony that his FTX shares were valued at $1 million at their highest. Doing the math, that means at one point, a single share of FTX was worth $31.25. Together, Tom and Gisele's 1.8 million shares could have been worth around $57 million at their peak. They probably also got tens of millions more in other forms of compensation, as Kevin O'Leary claimed to have received about $14 million in additional pay.
Unfortunately for Tom, Gisele, and all the other celebrity endorsers, it seems they might end up with nothing from their equity stakes.
Personal Life
Brady was in a relationship with actress Bridget Moynahan from 2004 until late 2006. On February 18, 2007, Moynahan revealed to People magazine that she was over three months pregnant with Brady's baby. They had split up in early December 2006, just around the time she found out she was expecting. Their son, John Edward Thomas Moynahan, arrived in August 2007.
In December 2006, Brady started seeing Brazilian model Gisele Bündchen after they were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend. The couple tied the knot on February 26, 2009, in a cozy ceremony at St. Monica Catholic Church in Santa Monica, California. They had a second wedding in Costa Rica in April 2009. Their son was born in 2009, followed by their daughter in 2012.
Sadly, Tom and Gisele called it quits in October 2022.
In March 2023, Tom Brady bought a minority stake in the WNBA's Las Vegas Aces from majority owner Mark Davis.

Diet
Brady's strict health regimen includes Transcendental Meditation, yoga, an 80/20 diet (meaning 80% alkaline and 20% acidic), early bedtime, resistance training, and neuroplasticity training. He and his family adhere to a controversial strict diet, the TB12 Method. He advocates drinking 1/32 of one's body weight in water daily. He does not eat most fruits, mushrooms, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, coffee, Gatorade, white sugar or flour, gluten, dairy, soda, cereal, white rice, potatoes, and bread.
Career Earnings
In addition to his roughly $30 million annual NFL salary, Tom made tens of millions every year from endorsements. Between 2000 and 2019 while Tom was with the Patriots, he earned $230 million from salary alone. In the same time frame, he earned an additional approximately $100 million from endorsements. During the same period, Gisele Bündchen's career earnings were nearly $500 million.
At the end of his two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he earned nearly $333 million in salary and $140 million from endorsements. In total, Tom Brady's career earnings top $473 million.
Real Estate
Massachusetts:
Back in May 2013, Tom and Gisele scooped up a lot in a gated community in Brookline, Massachusetts, for $4.5 million. They went on to create a stunning 10,000-square-foot mansion from scratch. Fast forward to August 2019, and they put the house on the market for $39.5 million. After a price cut to $33.9 million, it eventually sold in a private deal, and the sale price wasn’t revealed.
In 2006, Tom bought a building in Boston for $6.24 million. He later invested $11.5 million to transform it from nine condos into just four. By 2011, he sold the penthouse for $9.3 million and offloaded three of the other units for a total of $8 million.
Brentwood:
In 2009, Tom and Gisele snagged a vacant lot in Brentwood, LA, for $9 million. They then poured another $20 million into building a stunning 14,000-square-foot mansion, but they only lived there for less than a year. This impressive home, crafted from acid-washed limestone, boasts breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean.
Inside, you'll find hardwood floors, huge windows, open-beamed ceilings, several fireplaces, a top-notch kitchen, a spacious gym, airy marble bathrooms, and plenty of large closets. Outside, there's a koi-filled moat, a big pool, and a motor court made from reclaimed stones that you can only access by crossing a small bridge, all set in beautifully landscaped grounds. The whole place is eco-friendly, featuring solar power and grey-water systems, and it was built using reclaimed materials.
In May 2014, Dr. Dre purchased the property from them for $50 million. Not a bad profit of $21 million!
New York City:
Back in 2018, Tom and Gisele dropped $25.5 million on a 12th-floor pad in a New York City high-rise. They flipped that unit in December 2020 for a cool $40 million. They still hang onto a smaller unit in the same building, boasting 4,300 square feet with stunning views of the Hudson River.
Florida:
Towards the end of 2020, Tom and Gisele snagged a two-acre estate on Miami's super-exclusive Indian Creek island, famously dubbed Billionaire Bunker, for $17 million. This 300-acre island has only 34 lots and can be accessed via a single guarded bridge, with a private police force keeping watch around the clock. They decided to demolish the existing 5,700-square-foot mansion to make way for a much bigger one. Their neighbors include Jared Kushner, Ivanka Trump, and billionaire Carl Icahn.
Before settling on their Indian Creek digs, Tom and Gisele rented Derek Jeter's mansion in Tampa for about $75,000 a month.
After hanging up his football cleats, Tom Brady put his 6,500-square-foot Tampa home up for rent at $60,000 a month.
Montana:
Tom and Gisele also have a place at the Yellowstone Club in Big Sky, Montana. The specifics of their property are a bit of a mystery, but condos there start at around $6 million, while homes can go for over $30 million.
Tom Brady’s career has been nothing short of extraordinary, both on and off the field. With seven Super Bowl titles, five Super Bowl MVPs, and three NFL MVPs, Brady is widely regarded as the greatest quarterback in NFL history.
Beyond his football success, his savvy investments, endorsement deals, and business ventures have helped him build a remarkable fortune, with a net worth of $300 million. Even after retiring, Brady continues to thrive, securing a record-breaking broadcasting contract and remaining a key figure in sports and business. His legacy as a disciplined, strategic, and successful entrepreneur is undeniable.
