One of these affairs was with colleague Samantha Deering, with whom he had a child while still married to his first wife. He subsequently married Deering in 2010.
Hegseth and Samantha later experienced a divorce under similar circumstances. According to the New York Times, by late 2016, he was involved in an affair with another colleague, Jennifer Rauchet, an executive producer at Fox News. In August 2017, Rauchet gave birth to their first daughter, just one month prior to Hegseth filing for divorce from his second wife.

Upon Trump's announcement of Hegseth as his selection for Secretary of Defense, numerous past controversies associated with him reemerged. Notably, an email from his mother, Penelope Hegseth, surfaced, which she had sent during the ten-month divorce process from his second wife. The email included, in part: "You are an abuser of women — that is the ugly truth and I have no respect for any man that belittles, lies, cheats, sleeps around, and uses women for his own power and ego. You are that man (and have been for years) and as your mother it pains me and embarrasses me to say that, but it is the sad, sad truth."
In October 2017, a female employee of the California Federation of Republican Women reported to law enforcement in Monterey, California, that Hegseth had sexually assaulted her in a hotel room. This incident occurred while he was still married to his second wife and just two months after the birth of his daughter with his third wife. Although he has refuted the allegations, he acknowledged having engaged in sexual relations with the woman.
A further point of contention raised during the hearings pertains to his assertion that women should not participate in military service. He stated, "I firmly believe we should not have women in combat roles. It has not enhanced our effectiveness. It has not increased our lethality. Additionally, he has expressed opposition to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives, urged former President Trump to grant pardons to three soldiers accused or convicted of war crimes—an action that was taken—defended the individuals involved in the January 6 insurrection, made several statements deemed Islamophobic, issued anti-Asian remarks in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic, and raised concerns regarding his allegedly excessive and inappropriate alcohol consumption.
