Justin Baldoni Alleges Taylor Swift Influenced 'It Ends With Us' Script in $400M Lawsuit
Justin Baldoni Alleges Taylor Swift Influenced 'It Ends With Us' Script in $400M Lawsuit.
Justin Baldoni's production company, Wayfarer Studios, has initiated a lawsuit against Blake Lively, her spouse Ryan Reynolds, and her publicist Leslie Sloane, demanding $400 million. The lawsuit alleges that they engaged in a campaign to undermine the reputation of the 40-year-old Baldoni and to usurp creative control over the upcoming 2024 film, It Ends With Us.
Additionally, the legal documents implicate Taylor Swift, a close friend of Blake Lively, with Justin asserting that Taylor once entered a meeting between Blake and himself to commend Blake's recent rewrites.
In a statement, Justin's attorney Bryan Freedman said: "This lawsuit is a legal action based on an overwhelming amount of untampered evidence detailing Blake Lively and her team’s duplicitous attempt to destroy Justin Baldoni, his team and their respective companies by disseminating grossly edited, unsubstantiated, new and doctored information to the media."
He continued: "It is clear based on our own all out willingness to provide all complete text messages, emails, video footage and other documentary evidence that was shared between the parties in real time, that this is a battle she will not win and will certainly regret. Blake Lively was either severely misled by her team or intentionally and knowingly misrepresented the truth."
In the legal proceedings, Justin asserts that Blake altered a pivotal scene in which the primary characters first encounter one another. He further states that he visited Blake at her residence in New York City during the production to engage in further discussions regarding this matter.
Justin claims that Reynolds was there from the start "singing the praises of Blake's rewrite" and that hours later Taylor swift appeared to "offer her two cents".
The documents, as reported by TMZ, are said to contain emails exchanged between the two actors prior to the commencement of production, in which Justin claims that Blake "expressed warm gratitude" for the efforts they had made in their preparations.
The legal action, marking the initial instance in which Justin and his team have directly sued Blake, claims that the actress was "determined to make Baldoni the real-life villain in her story" in order to divert attention from her own alleged shortcomings.
Blake faced backlash for not addressing the film's themes related to domestic abuse and for utilizing the promotional tour to also advertise her hair care and beverage brand.
On December 21, 2024, Blake submitted a complaint against her It Ends With Us co-star, director, and co-producer Justin, citing "severe emotional distress" and accusing him of employing "sinister retaliatory tactics" aimed at damaging her reputation.
Shortly thereafter, she initiated a lawsuit claiming that the work environment was so hostile that a meeting involving "all parties" was convened to discuss the issues at hand; this meeting was also attended by Blake's husband, Ryan, and Jamey Heath from Wayfarer Productions.
Blake asserted that following her report of his inappropriate conduct to her superiors, Justin engaged a public relations crisis team to initiate a defamation campaign against her, should she choose to make her allegations public.
Blake contended that the PR team subsequently disseminated false information regarding her professional behavior in an effort to undermine her credibility; the actress is also pursuing legal action against crisis PR specialists Melissa Nathan and Jennifer Abel from the PR team.Justin subsequently initiated legal action against the New York Times, which had released the initial article regarding Blake's allegations. He accused the publication of conspiring with the actress to damage his reputation, asserting that the journalists selectively quoted him and removed essential context, thereby intentionally distorting the information to mislead readers.
Additionally, he alleged that the newspaper committed acts of libel and fraud against him. In response to the lawsuit, the New York Times has maintained its position, stating that their reporting was conducted with meticulous care and responsibility.
The lawsuit filed by Justin Baldoni against Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, and Taylor Swift raises significant questions about the dynamics of Hollywood collaboration and creative control. While the allegations suggest a concerted effort to undermine Baldoni's work on It Ends With Us, the claims remain highly contentious, especially given the involvement of such high-profile figures.
