Cabaret’ Star Joel Grey Sells Manhattan Loft for $7.6 Million.

After almost 30 years of ownership, the iconic Broadway star Joel Grey has sold his Manhattan loft, which he bought in 1999 for about $1.6 million shortly after it was built. According to Crain’s New York Business, the stylish industrial-style apartment changed hands in a discreet off-market transaction in mid-February, fetching $7.6 million from a group linked to the LLC Bring It Hudson. The property was listed by Tamer Howard from Corcoran, while Philip Tabor from the same firm represented the buyer.

Located on a full floor of Cary Tamarkin’s 11-story, nine-unit boutique building at 495 West Street, between Jane and West 12th streets—where photographer Annie Leibovitz also owned a unit before selling it for $8 million last year—Grey’s loft features two bedrooms and two bathrooms. Spanning just over 3,000 square feet, the open-concept space showcases exposed concrete floors, columns, and ceilings throughout.

Two secure elevators lead into a spacious gallery-style foyer that opens up to a vast great room highlighted by a 64-foot stretch of steel casement windows, providing stunning westward views of the Hudson River and nearby parkland. Joel Grey, best known for winning a 1967 Tony and a 1973 Oscar for his iconic portrayal of the Master of Ceremonies in Cabaret—and as the father of Dirty Dancing star Jennifer Grey—shared in a 2022 interview with The New York Times what initially drew him to the Manhattan loft. He was captivated by its floor plan and the creative possibilities of a new-construction building. “It was about open space, which I found so alluring, and about the mystery of how to make it a home,” Grey said. “It was an adventure.”
