John Goodman Cuts $700K Off the Price of His Historic New Orleans Home.
Hollywood icon John Goodman has recently reduced the price of his beloved New Orleans home by $700,000, just two months after listing it for $5.45 million. The 72-year-old actor, alongside his wife Anna Beth Goodman, has called this stunning property home for over two decades, having originally moved to Louisiana from Los Angeles in 1989.

Goodman and his family first settled into a home in a suburb of New Orleans, which the actor once described as "haunted." However, that three-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom house proved to be a bit too eerie for the family, prompting them to move.

In 2005, Goodman purchased a magnificent four-bedroom, 4.5-bathroom property in the city’s coveted Garden District from Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor for $1.8 million in an off-market deal. This house has since served as a peaceful retreat for the Goodmans, offering the perfect blend of Southern charm and modern luxury.

While it’s unclear why Goodman decided to part ways with the home, its listing came just weeks after the actor’s longtime California residence in Pacific Palisades was destroyed by wildfires in January. Goodman had owned the property since 2007, investing in extensive renovations over the years to expand and improve it for his frequent stays when working in Los Angeles.

In contrast, at their New Orleans residence, Goodman and his wife have preserved much of the historic character of the house, originally built in 1850. As the listing describes, they’ve “perfectly balanced” its old-world charm with modern upgrades.

The property’s highlights include deep double galleries that overlook lush gardens and a gated entryway framed by centuries-old Crepe Myrtles. Inside, the home is equally as impressive, featuring a grand staircase, a formal dining room, and a massive fireplace, all of which lend an air of warmth and sophistication.

With three spacious bedrooms, including a lovely primary suite, and a fourth room that can easily be converted into a bedroom, this home is both spacious and versatile.

The outdoor area is equally inviting, with a covered veranda perfect for lounging or enjoying New Orleans’ pleasant weather, and a saltwater pool to soak up the sun.
John Goodman has often expressed his love for New Orleans, and it’s clear that the city has played a significant role in his life. In a 2014 interview with Garden & Gun magazine, Goodman explained that his move to Louisiana from California was driven by a desire to get away from the hustle and bustle of Hollywood. He humorously added that he and his wife had originally considered moving to St. Louis before ultimately deciding on New Orleans.

Goodman’s affection for the city was solidified after attending Mardi Gras in 1972, an experience that left a lasting impression on him. “I can watch the tourists go by my front yard, be a zoo animal, read Willie Morris, sip a faux bourbon—in my case a Diet Coke—with some mint leaves,” he said with a grin. “No, seriously, it all started in 1972. I came down for Mardi Gras with a group of Sig Eps from Missouri—I went to what’s now called Missouri State. I just flipped for the city, and I’m too lazy to define what it is, exactly. After that, every time I’d get a couple of bucks, I’d go down.”

Though Goodman’s decision to part with this home remains a mystery, the property itself is a true gem—a magnificent blend of history, luxury, and charm. As for Goodman’s career, it’s a testament to his lasting impact on Hollywood, having been a beloved actor for decades. The New Orleans home will surely remain a significant chapter in his life story.
Given its beauty, character, and location, I would love to live in this home. The mix of old-world Southern charm and modern amenities makes it the perfect escape from the demands of Hollywood, and its rich history and timeless appeal are nothing short of impressive.
