Rosie O'Donnell Sells NYC Penthouse at $1 Million Loss After Relocating to Ireland.

After two years on the market, Rosie O'Donnell has finally found a buyer for her stunning New York City penthouse according to the New York Post—but unfortunately, she's taking quite a hit on the sale. The 63-year-old comedian and former talk show host is set to take a $1.1 million loss on the property, which she originally purchased in 2017 for $8 million.

Rosie decided to list the spacious penthouse in May 2023, hoping for a good return. She first priced it at $8.3 million, but despite multiple price reductions and relistings, the property didn’t sell until recently. The last asking price was set at $6.9 million, and now it’s "in contract," though the final sale price hasn’t been revealed.

When Rosie purchased the penthouse, it was an absolute dream home—a luxurious, four-bedroom, three-bathroom abode high above the New York skyline. The 33rd-floor apartment features a private rooftop terrace, a glass-enclosed dining room, a sauna, and even a wood-burning fireplace made of honed, black granite. The space is full of opulent details, such as imported wide-plank oak floors and an onyx stone wet bar.

The chef's kitchen is equally impressive, with Corian counter tops, an eat-in island, high-end appliances, and a 70-bottle wine fridge. It's the kind of space perfect for hosting friends and family. The master suite offers stunning western views, with a marble bathroom complete with a walk-in steam shower, soaking tub, and radiant floors.

One of the coolest features of the home is the "Guggenheim-inspired" spiral staircase that leads from the 33rd to the 32nd floor. This level even has its own guest entry for added privacy! And let’s not forget about the breathtaking 360-degree views of the Empire State Building, the East River, and the rest of Manhattan.

Despite her hefty loss on the sale, Rosie has moved on to a new chapter in her life—leaving behind the United States to settle in Ireland. She recently revealed in a TikTok video that she relocated with her youngest child, Dakota “Clay” O’Donnell, in January 2023. Rosie shared that she’ll be applying for Irish citizenship thanks to her Irish grandparents.

The move, however, wasn’t without its emotional struggles. Rosie expressed missing her other children, who remain in the U.S., and even though she’s happy in Ireland, she admitted to missing her friends and life back home. Still, she’s thrilled with the warm, welcoming nature of the people there and seems to be embracing her new life fully.

In the video, Rosie also explained that she and Clay are living a quiet life in Ireland, adjusting to the change and exploring their new surroundings. Rosie has always been an outspoken critic of former President Donald Trump, and her move to Ireland comes after years of political tension and a personal decision to leave the U.S. behind. She’s hopeful that when the political climate improves and the country feels “safe for all citizens,” she may return to the States. But for now, Ireland is where she feels most at peace.

Interestingly, Rosie’s move to Europe may have also been influenced by the devastation of the California wildfires, which destroyed her Malibu home in 2023. That loss, coupled with her desire for a fresh start, seems to have pushed her toward a permanent relocation abroad.

Throughout the years, Rosie has sold several other properties, including her South Nyack, NY, home, which she sold for $5.1 million in 2017, as well as a mansion in Saddle River, NJ, which she let go of at a significant loss. In addition, she parted ways with a West Palm Beach, FL, property in 2018 and made a hefty profit when she sold her Star Island estate in Miami for $16.5 million in 2003.

Despite the financial losses she’s taken on some properties, Rosie has certainly had her fair share of stunning homes—and the New York penthouse was no exception.

Her decision to leave the U.S. behind and start a new life in Ireland reflects a deep personal shift for Rosie. She’s always been a bold voice in the entertainment world, using her platform to speak out on issues she cares deeply about. Now, she’s embracing a new chapter, with a fresh perspective on life in Europe.

Though Rosie O'Donnell may have taken a financial loss on her New York City penthouse, the home itself is undeniably gorgeous. From the sleek, modern design to the incredible views of the Empire State Building and the East River, it's easy to see why this penthouse was so desirable. The space is perfect for someone who loves to entertain, with its expansive kitchen, multiple bedrooms, and private rooftop terrace. Personally, I would absolutely love to live in a place like this—exploring the vibrant city and enjoying all the luxury the penthouse offers would be a dream!
