He is the son of Gil Gomes, a former Portugal under-21 international who was originally from Angola, and who was playing for Hendon at the time. The Gomes family later relocated to the Manchester area when Gil joined Middlewich Town, eventually settling in Salford, where Adilson spent his childhood. Nani, the former Portugal international and Manchester United winger, is Gomes' godfather.
