GM Recalls Over 460,000 Vehicles Due to Rear Wheel Lock-Up Risk

General Motors (GM) is recalling 461,839 diesel vehicles across several of its brands due to a transmission issue that could cause the rear wheels to lock up, potentially leading to accidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced the recall, impacting multiple Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac models produced between 2020 and 2022.

Which GM Models Are Affected?

The recall affects a range of GM’s popular models equipped with diesel engines, including:

  • Chevrolet: 2020-2022 Silverado 1500, 2500, and 3500 models; 2021 Tahoe; 2021 Suburban
  • GMC: 2020-2022 Sierra 1500, 2500, and 3500 models; 2021 Yukon and Yukon XL
  • Cadillac: 2021 Escalade and Escalade ESV

According to NHTSA’s recall notice, the issue stems from a transmission valve prone to wear, which can lead to rear wheel lock-up, posing a crash risk. The recall is limited to vehicles with diesel engines, as the specific transmission control valve defect does not affect gas-powered models.

Understanding the Transmission Issue

The problem with the affected vehicles lies in the transmission control valve, which can wear down over time, causing transmission fluid to leak and resulting in a drop in pressure within the valve. This condition can lead to harsh shifting or, in severe cases, the rear wheels locking up. Drivers may notice rough shifting before any wheel issues arise, giving some early warning of a potential problem.

GM’s investigation, which began in July 2024, uncovered 1,888 field reports and 11 incidents where the issue caused minor property damage and three cases involving minor injuries. The recall notice cited customer complaints dating back to January 2020.

How to Get Your Vehicle Fixed

GM will offer a free software update to all affected vehicles. This update for the transmission control module will monitor valve performance, detect excess wear about 10,000 miles before a lock-up might occur, and prevent the transmission from locking by shifting gears automatically. Additionally, a warning light will alert drivers if the software detects an issue, and GM will provide a program to cover repairs for defective valves.

Owners of the affected vehicles will receive a notification via mail with instructions on scheduling repairs.
