Browns Sign Myles Garrett to Historic Contract Extension.

Since the Cleveland Browns picked Myles Garrett as a defensive end in 2017, he’s been one of the league’s standout defensive players. He’s made it to six All-Pro teams (four first-team and two second-team), been selected for six Pro Bowls, and snagged the NFL Defensive Player of the Year award in 2023. Over his career, he’s racked up 102.5 sacks and forced 20 fumbles.

Even with Garrett’s impressive performance, the Browns have struggled as a team, making the playoffs twice but only winning one game. Last season was particularly rough, ending with a disappointing 3-14 record. Recently, Garrett asked to be traded, expressing a desire to join a team with a better shot at winning. The Browns were firm about not trading him, and just a few days ago, owner Jimmy Haslam declined to meet with Garrett regarding his request.

It seemed like things were at a standstill for a while. But it turns out the Browns just needed to throw a record-breaking amount of cash into the mix.

Garrett and the Browns have now agreed to a four-year contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2030 season. He’ll be averaging $40 million a year with this new deal, which includes a whopping $123.5 million in guaranteed money. This makes it the biggest contract ever for a non-quarterback in NFL history, and it also comes with a no-trade clause.

Cleveland is sitting pretty with the No. 2 pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. They still have to navigate the rough waters of Deshaun Watson's hefty contract for another two years, but there’s a glimmer of hope with the draft on the horizon. Two quarterbacks, Cam Ward from Miami and Shedeur Sanders from Colorado (who happens to be the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders), are looking like potential game-changers.

If the Browns snag one of these guys and build a strong offense around him, Myles Garrett can lead a defense that’s eager to bounce back after a rough 2024 season. While the Browns ranked eighth in third down defense, they struggled in many other defensive stats, often landing in the bottom half of the league. A lot of that was due to the offense putting the defense in tough spots, so better quarterback play could really turn things around.

For now, Garrett is content with his record-setting deal. But if the losses keep piling up, he might just consider waving his no-trade clause and looking for a way out of Cleveland again.

Myles Garrett’s record-setting contract extension is a well-deserved recognition of his immense talent and leadership on the field. With six Pro Bowls, six All-Pro selections, and the 2023 NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, Garrett has proven himself as one of the league’s most dominant defensive players.

This contract ensures that he remains a key cornerstone for the Browns’ defense through 2030. With Garrett’s continued presence and the potential for an improved offense, Cleveland’s future looks brighter. His commitment to the team will undoubtedly inspire both his teammates and fans as they strive for future success.
