Kanye West’s Malibu Beach House Re-listed for $39 Million After Being Gutted By The Rapper.

Kanye West’s Malibu beach house, once a lavish symbol of opulence, has been put back on the market for $39 million after the rapper bought it, gutted it, and abandoned it. The property, originally designed by renowned architect Tadao Ando, was purchased by West in 2021 for an eye-watering $57.25 million. However, instead of preserving the architectural beauty of the minimalist masterpiece, West chose to rip it apart with plans to transform it into a modernist “bomb shelter.”

West’s grand ideas were short-lived, and soon after the home was gutted, the musician walked away from the project, leaving the house in a state of disrepair and exposed to the elements. His lack of foresight and disregard for the home’s legacy triggered outrage from architecture enthusiasts who were dismayed by the damage caused to such an iconic piece of design.

The property was listed by West in January 2024 for $53 million, but after months of failed negotiations, real estate developer Steve "Bo" Belmont purchased it for $21 million. Belmont, CEO of the real estate crowdfunding firm Belwood Investments, vowed to restore the home to its former glory, promising a $5 million renovation. But even Belmont has had to re-evaluate the situation.

Now, less than a year later, Belmont has re-listed the property for $39 million, citing the extensive restoration work still required. The description of the listing notes that all interior finishes have been stripped, and significant work is necessary to either restore or reimagine the interiors before the home is livable. Despite this, Belmont remains confident that the house will eventually reach a higher price tag once the restoration is completed, with estimates ranging from $55 million to $65 million.

"I’m obviously not going to take [the lower offers]," Belmont said, referring to offers as low as $28 million and $30 million. "But there’s been a lot of activity."

Interestingly, Belmont’s decision to sell the property in its current state may be driven by the ongoing carrying costs, which are approximately $1 million per month. However, he insists the project is far from over, with updates such as new plumbing, electrical work, a restored roof, and the framing completed. The windows, imported from Germany, are expected to arrive by the end of summer, and Belmont plans to continue with the restoration until he receives an acceptable offer.

Despite the ongoing work, Belmont sees the house as a blank canvas for potential buyers. "This house is like a Picasso," said Jason Oppenheim, the celebrity real estate agent handling the listing. "This is almost like allowing the buyer to pick the frame."

However, the downfall of West's vision for the Malibu home reflects a larger pattern in the rapper’s life. Known for his increasingly erratic behavior, West's disregard for both the property's unique design and its cultural significance is emblematic of his broader trajectory in recent years. His controversial decisions—both professionally and personally—have alienated fans, businesses, and the public alike. At one time, he was hailed as a visionary, but his increasingly chaotic actions, such as the abandonment of this mansion and his divisive rhetoric, have severely tarnished his legacy.

Instead of securing a place in architectural history, West's Malibu home is now a symbol of squandered potential and disillusionment. This once-stunning property, torn apart by West’s whims, is a bitter reminder of how far the rapper’s fall from grace has come—both in terms of his career and his impact on culture. The future of this house now lies in the hands of Belmont, who hopes to restore it—but for West, the grand mansion stands as yet another casualty of his unchecked ambition and spiraling reputation.

What could have been a lasting tribute to modern design and artistic vision has instead become a reflection of the unpredictable and reckless trajectory of Kanye West.
